I have been asked by various people to comment on the KTB Vs Serena view on tourism numbers. KTB is using arrival figures at both JKIA & MIA . The arrival figures are NOT necessarily arrivals who will put up in hotels. We have very many arrivals from UK who are not necessarily tourists Eg returning Kenyan Asians who hold British passports, very large number of Somalis holding US, UK, Canadian pp. Our own Kenyans who also hold British passports. These arrivals do not necessarily put up in hotels but are counted as arrivals. We then have a huge number of real tourists who land at JKIA but head across the border into Namanga then Arusha. Many Americans , British, Australians et al do that but they are counted as arrivals at JKIA while they spent all the time in Ngorongoro & Serengeti. The dilemma for KTB is that hotels in Kenya hardly share stats of occupancies, nationalities etc etc. They are then left to give us arrivals numbers which is not accurate. The 4% drop by KTB is overall Kenya figure of course cushioned by all the wrong figures I have stated above. The fact is that Kenya coast is down on average by 40%. Nairobi hotels are definitely doing better than Kenya coast. We must revisit how we compute our figures that is key I hope this will help you to understand the whole picture.
