I have been reading the Harry Potter books over with Emily Foereal - TopicsExpress

I have been reading the Harry Potter books over with Emily Foereal and we got to talking about Hogwarts. We both (obviously) wish it was real. We started discussing different aspects of the school and I dont see why there cant be a school structured like that. The Meyers-briggs personality test could be used in place of the sorting hat to group like-minded (in the most literal of meanings) children together. This would allow the students to learn with their peers in a setting that is conducive to the entire class learning at a similar pace. This would eliminate the no child left behind program that tends to hold back the children that learn easier than the children that need a different teaching method employed. Sorting the children into houses based on personality type could allow introverts and extraverts to get what they need from classes without overshadowing each other, etc. There are 16 different personality types accounted for by the MBTI system. These could be reduced down to 4 main houses of the types that work well together. Then we can examine the grading system they employ: students are graded on in class assignments as well as exams but also gain and lose points in a team setting. Having accountability is important. Knowing that your house is only as strong as the weakest member would encourage the students to help each other prepare for lecture and tests. Students stand to lose points for the entire house based on disruption, behavioral issues and such, while gaining points for being prepared for class and knowing the information expected. Rotating the classes through lessons on their own and in mixed sessions provides a learning experience in working with other personality types in an environment designed to benefit the students. The students were tracked in their higher grades based on aptitudes for different subjects (OWLs). Their higher education at the school was determined by the scores they qualified for. The exams they took allowed the students to prepare for their futures and have more guidance in terms of what jobs they would be suited for based on their personality, achievement, interest and skills. The children graduating from wizarding school had a good idea of where they were going in life. Many students graduating today have no idea if they even want to go to college. If they were nurtured onto a path that they were naturally suited for they could have more success and be prepared for the steps needed after high school to achieve their goals. This system also kept students that lacked interest from taking classes where they might disturb more inclined students. The students still end up well rounded but have more structure and guidance. There is also a part of me that wonders if the fact that it was a boarding school also increased independence in the children and allowed them the freedom to really become who they want and develop character away from their parents. Then I realize that this is all thoughts coming from reading a childrens series and think that I really need a hobby.
