I have been thinking about Sears and Roebuck all morning, because - TopicsExpress

I have been thinking about Sears and Roebuck all morning, because I fear its going to go out of business. I like Sears. I have so many memories of going through their Christmas catalogue as a kid and putting my initial on everything I wanted. There was a heavy emphasis on domestics: dolls, doll clothes, and play kitchen things. I REALLY wanted an Easy Bake oven, which I NEVER GOT, which is why I frequently contemplate a kitchen renovation that will basically make my first floor all kitchen all the time. Because where does everybody always want to be? In the kitchen. And in that dream kitchen, I will have a multi-multi-multi-burner Easy Bake oven. Well, not Easy Bake, of course. Ill have a restaurant quality oven. Very....metallic. I wont do this renovation, but I like to think about it. When I was having my office built into the bedroom I work in, I asked the designer, Is there any way we could make it look like a 40s kitchen? Like, could my desk be one of those metal tables with a silverware drawer? And the curtains 40s tablecloths? She remained tactfully silent, but I still think it was a swell idea. But this is not what I need to write about right now. Right now I need to provide an update on the next Writing Matters event, which is on September 13th at 7pm at the Hemingway Museum on Oak Park Ave. It will feature the award- winning and ultra-charming author, Betsy Woodman, whose work is often compared to Alexander McCall Smith, and to the film Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Were going to put up posters soon, there will be articles in the newspapers, and Ive spoken with both Whole Foods and Khyber Pass about providing wonderful Indian food. Ive planned for 100 people, but its possible well have more. If you are planning on attending, I hope youll buy your ticket soon; I want to be sure I have enough food and wine. Plus, if you must know, I go to Brown Paper Tickets every day with hope in my heart to see how many tickets weve sold. For weeks, weve been holding at ten. But you can make it go up! And then Ill get so happy and excited! You can find the information for buying tickets on my website: elizabeth-berg.net/fun things/writing matters You can either send a check to the address given, or use the Brown Paper ticket option. This would be the time to start spreading the word about the event to other friends you think might enjoy it. Get a group of people and come on out--have dinner before or after. Bring your friends, your book club, people you work with, your entire extended family. Okay, enough, I feel like a carnival barker. But let me just add this: I dont know about you, but the news lately is making me really look forward to such a happy event. (Complete with fortune teller, a 12-year old girl doing a warm-up reading, and Indian music. And flowers.) I have already found the author to come after Betsy. It will be a man whose prose is so gorgeous it might make you pass out. More details later. Thank you so much for supporting this event, in whatever way you choose to. Even if you live in Montana and have no intention of coming, I appreciate your good wishes. Also, I appreciate your state, but thats fodder for a different post.
