I have been watching on PBS the new Ken Burns documentary about Franklin Roosevelt. Besides it being Ken Burns film which are always fantastic, the story of FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt is just amazing. I know people say that folks from that time were cut from a different cloth. I have to agree. Eleanor, in one part of WWII, traveled in to the South Pacific to visit Military hospitals. She traveled 25,000 miles in 25 days. Every man she met in the hospitals, and she went to every single man in every hospital, asked where they were from, if they needed anything etc. After the trip, she wrote a letter to every injured mans family to let them know how they were doing. She said the visit was so intense it took her five weeks to get over what she saw. She also said the smell of the burn ward stayed with her until the day she died. One other thing I found fascinating is that FDR, a Democrat, was having trouble getting Congress to get off their asses to pass bills for the war so he was using his executive privilege to get things done. Just like Obama. And, just like Obama, the Republicans threatened him with impeachment. The Republicans also said that Eleanors trips to the hospitals were a frivolous use of government money so they put the kibosh on the visits. I just found it amazing that the crap going on today was happening in the 40s. Please do not take this as a slanted rant against Republicans. It is not intended to be that way as i am sure there have been plenty of times when Democrats have pulled crap on Republicans. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Be safe out there. Have fun, drink to much and talk to someone whos clothes are not color coordinated. (that is a movie quote, any takers?)
