I have comments and messages from family and friends contrasting my comments of the Ferguson shooting case. These same people also jump to the conclusion that the guy shot was shot illegally by the cop. From the start it was reported that the cop was injured and the first gunshot was in the police vehicle but it was unknown who actually fired the weapon. Most either did not hear about the injury or dismissed it and wanted to blame the police for excessive use of force. About 15 years ago I responded to a house party and attempted to arrest three underage persons for drinking under the age of 21. I got two in my patrol vehicle and the third one fled. I called for back up (who had to be called out of bed) to assist in the apprehension of the one that tried to get away, wearing my cuffs behind his back. I went around the house and in some bushes this person appeared. As I ran at him I noticed the cuffs were now in front of him, giving him better balance and a greater ability to run or fight. I caught him and tackled him. I wrestled him to gain control and he have me a knee to the right side of my head, I had excruciating pain, swelling and a little dizziness. As this happened my backup arrived and attempted to jump on the lower half of this suspect and he got a foot to the side of the head also. We eventually gained control of this person and he went to jail. I went to the ER and got checked out, eventually the swelling went down, the pain went away but the TMJ is a constant reminder that this punk, in an attempt to flee me, attempted to cause me great bodily harm to escape. If my backup did not respond in a timely manner or if I would have been kicked in the head one more time I would have had to use deadly force to stop the assault on myself. This person was a minority, half my size and twice as quick. Where would I be today if I had shot that person, would I be able to live with having taken the life of another person, would there have been rioting in the streets like Ferguson and me fearing the safety of myself, my family and my future to do what I love. One more second, one more kick and I would have the face of the person I would have had to kill engrained in my mind for the rest of my life. As far as I know he is still in prison for the assault on me, stolen vehicle and other felony assault charges. I feel for the cop in Ferguson, I am sure that in his mind and for his own safety he had to shoot a man to save his own life. For those who have not worked in law enforcement can not really say what the would do in the same situation but so many are experts in criticizing what cops have to do on a daily basis.
