I have copied and pasted a post I made to Terri after I saw the dental surgeon today: The dentist told me from the very beginning that in his experience or in the literature there is only a 50% statistic in which cats totally get over stomatitis from having had a full mouth extractioin. But 50% do get cured! So it can be a really great result! (Our Patches got 100% cured!) 25% get partly better (thats Toby) and need extra help, and 25% dont get any relief from the dental extraction. (Oh, and by the way, my meeting with him was SUPER important: We discussed how to handle adoption issues of my cats who need to be adopted and who have had calici and (b) he told me that the Humane Society of NY does NOT HAVE DENTAL X-RAY MACHINES!!! The latter blew me away as it is a heavily used and award winning place. I was about to take my 11th cat there for her dental work to save $$. (Our total expenditures have been hideous.) But now I will not do it. He saved me from going where they dont do x-rays for dentistry! He said that 50% of vets in NYC have no dental x-ray machines. He said it is really primitive still in so many places. (Readers: Never, ever do dental work without having x-ray machines for dentistry there, that is, dental radiography. DO NOT do that. Please! It is not possible for the vet to know before or after where the roots and fragments are, if they were left in and this can cause an abscess. I asked him if Marie is not getting a full mouth extraction, what if there are no dental x-rays and he said no, do not ever do any dental work on a cat without dental x-rays before and after PERIOD. )
