I have good news! We officially got word today that the California National Guard will NOT be taking back the reenlistment bonus given to my husband over 8 years ago. We jumped through so many hoops and went through great lengths to prove that his bonus was in fact legitimate. Even though he was not given proper due process, and had been considered guilty until he could prove himself innocent. We fought this, and dealt with the stupidity. Im still very sad for all the other veterans who have been steamrolled and harassed into recoupment. Many of them are disabled veterans who fought for this country. It makes me sick to my stomach to think they are being taken advantage of like this, just so a certain National Guard Colonel can get bragging rights and a positive line in his evaluation for recouping money. We were very lucky to have saved documents from a decade ago! I mean, really, who has paperwork lying around that long. We were so lucky! Especially military families who are constantly moving around. Im happy for us but still very irate for my fellow Guardsmen.
