I have just returned from seeing the movie, #Selma. I was very impacted watching the movie. It was everything I expected and more based on what others have shared and reviews I have read. This is a movie I recommend everyone should see. I highly recommend that social studies and history teachers should arranged for their students to see and then have structured discussions. This is a film that would make a great discussion starter for those interested in having discussions on race. As I watched the events unfold I found myself reflecting how recent events like the efforts of the #Republicans to limit the opportunities for people (especially folks of color) to vote and how similar the efforts that Dr. King and others were pushing to guarantee there would be nothing standing in the way for blacks to vote. Given the progress that has been made it is sad how some folks still hold onto the belief that black people should not have full and equal rights. As it was very clear that when white people saw what was happening in Alabama when black people were marching to Selma and were brutally attacked they came to join in the protest. Today whites need to step forward and demand that voting rights must be completely upheld. We will not have institutionalized equality until white people fully embrace this belief, principle and policy. I would like to hear opinions from others.
