I have long believed social networks could do so much more than help for-profit organizations become more profitable and effective. Ive especially felt that social networks could eventually give us the collective power to radically change how we create and, especially, distribute value. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a place where that is happening in any significant way; at least not where I normally find myself. Perhaps Ive not looked hard enough. Regardless, in this TED Talk, Celine relates the effort to combat Dengue Fever and how social impact is the desired result of social networks. She offers a quote from Robert Phillips (Ive tried, but cant discern which of the many Robert Phillipses in the world shes referring to), which suggests the essence of her talk. Networks and coalitions, not institutional hierarchies, are the business models of the future: collaboration, not control; thinkers, not technocrats. She also points out that social networks arent competing for territory; theyre building bridges. Watch this. Its worth 16 minutes of your career.
