I have no problem with the analysis, or even with outright hostility to political Islam on the part of many of our intellectuals, but I thought my former professor--whom I respect very much-- would take an unequivocal, and for that matter, a principled stance against the recent repressive measures taken by the regime against the Clinic and the NGO. In 2003, professor Ely was wrongly arrested and jailed for political reason. He was then the spokesperson of the presidential candidate and former president Ould Haydala, and I had the honor of working with his team. We all (those of us who have no ideological affiliations then--like me--and those who were Islamists) protested then. The reason was simple. We were against restraining peoples freedom or denying them rights due to them by our laws or constitution for political or other reasons. Ely was then accused of taking a part in a plan to overthrow the regime, known as GRAP1. Today, the Islamists are the target of the same kind of idiocy.
