I have no real problems with the concept of atheism. If that is what you choose to believe then more power to you. I disagree respectfully but hey that is what freedom of religion is all about isnt it? Oh, no you say? You tell me I cannot have a nativity display on public land because you paid taxes for it. Ummmm you seem to conveniently forget that I paid taxes for it too. The money for setup, tear down and maintenance of the display does not come from your pocket. That I agree would be a violation. But since it is privately paid for and the people only wish to use a parcel of land that the volunteers have already paid taxes for is not an imposition on your rights. The same can be said for Boy Scouts use of public facilities. Their parents and many other supporters paid taxes for the facilities too. In both of these cases you also forget that your belief system holds sway for the majority of the time. The public land sits empty of religious decoration 90% of the time... Isnt that your wish? The Boy Scouts do not use the public facilities for the preponderance of the year. Doesnt that satisfy you? Neither activity precludes your use of the public lands in question either. I am rather tired of the fact that atheists cannot seem to grasp the idea that other people have religious freedom as well. The doctrine of separation of church and state was never meant to be restrictive. It in fact was meant to be inclusive. The idea was that a government should never mandate a religious belief. Yet the suppression of religion by the government is de facto a state mandated religious belief. Your argument that Christians are forcing you to believe is invalid. Lets revisit an old bone of contention on that subject. Prayer in school. I will grant that a mandatory prayer in school is probably wrong ethically. So the schools offered a compromise. They offered a moment of silence instead. Where those who wished to pray could pray. Those who wished to meditate could meditate and those who wished neither could just respect that others did want this option. But this was overturned in court as being the same as a prayer. Hoohockey. I suspect it was actually discarded because a moment of silence irritated the activists because they would actually have to shut up for a moment and acknowledge other peoples rights.
