I have not made a quilt in 20 years. I made them based on the way - TopicsExpress

I have not made a quilt in 20 years. I made them based on the way my grandmother taught me to do it. Needless to say, a lot has changed. I have some basic questions. In all of the youtube videos I have seen, nobody is using a serger Why? I could join the blocks with my serger and leave the blade up. It seems like the seams would be much stronger. I want to make a baby quilt for a friend and a quilt for our twin sized bed in the spare room. The two quilts would be identical except for size. I have purchased the brightest colors I could find in red, orange, yellow, green, indigo and violet. I am making simple block quilts in rainbow colors. I want these to be sturdy quilts that people are not afraid of using. I am considering my options for quilt block sizes. Grandma made unbelievably intricate designs and most of her blocks were 10-16 depending on how complicated the designs were within each block. Do you have suggestions as to how I should decide on the size of blocks I use? It occurred to me that I could starch the fabric before I start cutting and sewing. Does anyone do that? Is it a good idea? I was considering simply using the oversized backing to fold up around the edges and sew to use as binding. I dont see anyone doing that. Is it a bad idea? The other question is somewhat odd. When I started talking about my plans for making these quilts, someone said that there is a new tradition going around for baby quilts. She said that if a mom has a miscarriage or her baby dies very young, the next baby gets a quilt with rainbows on it. Has anyone heard of that? I just wanted to make the brightest colored quilt I could think of. Is making a rainbow themed quilt for a baby really well known and symbolic? I dont want to remind this mom of her miscarriage every time she reaches for the rainbow quilt I made for her. I doubt she has ever heard of the new tradition anyway. She is only a couple weeks along so I wont tell her about the quilt until she is well into the second trimester. Thanks for all of your help!!!
