I have read 1 Timothy before, but I never went into the background - TopicsExpress

I have read 1 Timothy before, but I never went into the background of what was going on. 1 Timothy 2:8-15 are common scriptures people refer to when saying women dont belong in the pulpit. Now after reading it in the context of the situation I found that Paul wrote a letter to Timothy because of the false teachings being done at the church of Ephesus. Also in the first-century Jewish culture women werent allowed to study Gods word. 1 Timothy 2:11 says how women should learn in quietness and full submission. Paul was offering them a new opportunity to learn Gods word! They were to listen and learn quietly and submissively referred to an attitude of quietness and composure (not total silence). 1 Timothy 2:12 Paul said, I do not permit women to teach or to assume authority over a man. Paul only said that because the women in the Ephesian church were abusing their newly acquired Christian freedom. They were new converts, they did not yet have the necessary experience, knowledge, or Christian maturity to teach those who already had extensive scriptural education. Paul did not forbid women from ever teaching. Paul commended coworker, Priscilla, who taught Apollos, the great preacher. Paul just didnt want the Ephesian women to teach because they didnt yet have enough knowledge or experience. The principle that applies to today is--do not out anyone in position of leadership who has not yet matured in faith. I said all that to say this If you are naive you will be deceived, know Gods word for yourself. Let no man put obstacles in your way that are contrary to what you have learned (Romans 16:17-18) O.J you was on it!
