I have read with interest the many posts on Pembroke Connect regarding skating on the ponds of Pembroke Country Club and wish to inform everybody who has rushed to judgment of the actual facts. Our family has dedicated our lives to the sport of hockey and the kids grew up playing on local ponds. We are deeply rooted to the heritage of the sport and love nothing better than watching kids playing pond hockey. Unfortunately the issue Mr. Baird has posted about has nothing to do with pond skating. This issue has to do with a number of individuals who feel they are somehow entitled to enter onto private property with their cars despite signage indicating cars are not allowed on the golf course. These disrespectful thoughtless individuals proceeded to drive their vehicles across fairways and greens on holes 8,9 and 11 thereby causing several thousand dollars in damage. The lady everyone is chastising reported these violations to the greens superintendent who asked her to remove the people from the pond to prevent further damage to the golf course. She had permission to cross country ski as she is an employee who knows where to ski without causing damage. As much as we would love watching the people skating on our ponds we are a business which depends heavily on the conditions of the golf course and have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to upgrade the quality of the course for our golfing customers. I also know many of the people skating on the pond and am deeply disappointed that the actions of a few disrespectful individuals are now causing us to take steps to protect our property from potentially tens of thousands dollars of damage and the liability associated with potential injuries incurred on our private property. I believe some of your comments should be directed at the disrespectful individuals who are spoiling this great sports pastime for everyone. And to the poster who said Jeremy would probably love to join them. You are right he would. So would I if the body were still willing. I would be more than happy to hear from any of the posters who commented, especially those who feel people should invade the property and feel entitled to using the ponds. Hopefully they will have a swimming pool at their house I can jump in to when I get hot this summer. If you wish to discuss this issue feel free to contact me at 617-429-2145. Wally Roenick
