I have recently, and perhaps (unfortunately? troublingly? worriedly?) become cognizant of how little people think about others, especially the workers of the world. We interact with many strangers everyday, and often do not give them a second glance or regard them as human beings. All people have families, have friends, loved ones, ideas, hopes, dreams, EMOTIONS. Yes, they are making your burger, taking your order, cleaning your building, changing your commode, but they deserve just as much of your respect as anyone else. I have never been in a position where I have had to demand fair treatment. I feel as a kind, giving, pleasant person who believes that everyone has a good side and a story worth hearing that people live up to my expectations. But recently, my eyes have been opened to a new world where we treat our fellow man as an expendable resource. I am not sure if I can accept what I have experienced. My naive hope is that maybe my insight can bring insight to your life. So today, (figuratively) hug a minimum wage worker, try and come up with their background stories, humanize your interactions. Let us make this world one that regards all with respect and dignity. “I saw a new world coming rapidly. More scientific, efficient, yes. More cures for the old sicknesses. Very good. But a harsh, cruel, world. And I saw a little girl, her eyes tightly closed, holding to her breast the old kind world, one that she knew in her heart could not remain, and she was holding it and pleading, never to let her go.” ― Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go
