Some people say subjects like arts, music, drama and creative writing are more beneficial to children, and therefore they need more of these subjects to be included in the school program. Do you agree or disagree? The introduction of extra arts and other related subjects into school’s curriculum has been a recently controversial topic. Whilst some people ignore the arts for educational purpose, others emphasize its essence in nurturing young talents. Personally, I strongly agree with the latter. It is the focus of a plethora of schools to boost students’ test scores by providing them more instructions, exercises and memorization. The irony is that most of these schools fail to achieve their aims as students experience increased frustration, endurance and pressure. The increment of visual arts, on the other hand, is proved to improve student’s scores by cultivating their creativity and sharpening their spatial reasoning and critical-thinking skills. Not only are children able to understand the roots of a problem but they also know that there are more than one way to solve it. As a result, students who take additional art-based classes appear to be more intelligent and creative in classes than their peers. Another benefit of increasing the hours of teaching art-related subjects is that those subjects explore the innate abilities among children. It is an unfortune that many students nowadays have little chance to be in the spotlight and express themselves. Current study program can give students a general overview about the subjects but insufficient for them to communicate what they have learnt, in other words, letting students themselves reproduce the arts. If further courses are equipped, students may be encouraged to participate in music, drama and creative writing contests, where their talents are discovered and nurtured by arts professionals. In a nutshell, I believe that art-based subjects should be taught more in schools in order to accelerate students’ school performance and recognize their geniuses.
