I have seen new posts across my wall, people actually COMPLAINING about people doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Well, as someone whose entire life has been affected by ALS, I have to say if the ONLY thing anyone took from this Viral Video Craze is that they maybe look up ALS, or learn about what it is, then I call that a WIN. People ask me what is going on with Chuck, and I will tell them he has ALS, and they have looked at me with everything from a blank stare, all the way to thinking it was some kind of cancer. Sometimes, even after I would tell them it’s Lou Gehrig’s disease they still didn’t know. But that’s not what people are complaining about. People are saying don’t pour ice water over your head, just donate. Well, according to the New York Times, “As of Sunday, the association said it had received $13.3 million in donations since July 29, compared with $1.7 million during the same period last year. It said there were about 260,000 new donors. As of Sunday, the association said it had received $13.3 million in donations since July 29, compared with $1.7 million during the same period last year. Maybe this whole Ice Bucket Challenge thing will just be a fad. Maybe next week there will be some new viral thing that everyone is doing. But this week, millions of people learned a little bit about ALS. And millions and millions of dollars were raised. And maybe, just maybe this will become more than a trend, and someone in the near future won’t have to suffer, like I’ve seen my husband suffer. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
