I have shared this before but it bears repeating, especially today. My dad was a patriot. My entire family tree is filled with branches of patriots. My parents taught me at a young age to love and respect this Nation for all of the opportunities it provides and to honor those who protect and serve it. I am eternally grateful for that. One such example is this poem that my father penned in 1976 for our Nations bicentennial. There was a poetry contest being sponsored by our local newspaper in Indiana, The Noblesville Daily Ledger, for our Nations 200th birthday celebration. My dads poem took top honors. Its still the only poem I can recite from memory. I remember as a young girl watching him write this poem on his drafting board in our dining room. The words came effortlessly to him. Yes, he was gifted in his vernacular ability. But more than that, he believed these words to his core. He lived them. He served in the Army before I came along as did his father before him and he never forgot the lessons he learned during that time. I miss him every single day. As I grow older, these words become more and more meaningful to me. I am so grateful for parents who raised me to respect, honor and remember the sacrifices made by so few for so many. Thank you, mom and dad! Happy Independence Day everyone! Happy birthday, America!
