I have sometimes been told that people cant afford a dress made by me. So I thought I would give you an average breakdown of the price of one of my dresses. So for a printed cotton its is around £15 per metre, for a 1950s style circle skirt dress is about 5 metres for a 45inch wide fabric. So thats £75 just in the top fabric, then add lining about 3.5 meters since it is plain and usually a wider fabric, and about £5 per metre, so add £17ish, that comes to £93, add a zip at £3 that at comes to £96, sometimes I may need to add buttons, hooks and eyes, boning etc. a simple dress will take about 6 hours to make, if its from a sewing pattern I have already used, and the size of the pattern caters for the customers measurements, more often than not I will have to use it to make a sewing pattern as it may not be the correct size. This can take me a few hours to get it right, drawing redrawing, making a muslin etc. so at cost price a dress can be anywhere from £60 to £100, I charge £110 for an average cotton halterneck dress, sometimes I earn less than £1 per hour, still think Im too expensive ??
