I have spent a fascinating week poring over Installation orders of services, with a healthy dose of ordinations as well. What a delight. I have reviewed the programs from the services of Emily Gage, Lilianne Nye, Cynthia Lgk, Governor Deval Patrick (Inauguration), Lynn Thomas Strauss, Nurya Love Parish, Sharon Dittmar, Eileen Bonnie Devlin, Robin Bartlett, Katie Lee Crane and others. I decided against Rank By Rank because it felt too minister-centric for me. I went with Ode To Joy as a Processional because I love it, because it rocks, and because its lyrics were written during a golden age for my congregation. I carefully crafted the covenantal vows so that they are less professional and more spiritual, and even mystical. God is more a part of this installation, because my theology of covenant is much deeper than it was the last time I did this. Psalm 121 is the Scripture reading because I need it to be and it suits where we are as a movement and a church. Bernsteins Simple Song gets in there because I love it and because it has been sung at my ordination and both previous installations in my ministry: a musical continuity. I wish I could have every single one of you who have shaped, inspired, sustained and nurtured me up there to be part of the service but we would be there for a week. You know who you are. There are so many of you because I have been richly blessed in my life by lay and ordained ministers galore. Those of you who will not be there in body will be there in spirit.
