I have spoken with the director of NRV Health Department, Dr. Molly ODell, about the illness advisory issued by PCPS and she shared the following information - An isolated illness has occurred among a small group of people - limited to one family and a close family friend - in the New River Valley. Tragically, two have died. Four are hospitalized in fair condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. There is no confirmation yet regarding the cause of the illness, but there is absolutely no indication of person-to-person transmission. At this point in the investigation there is no indication of any public health risk. This appears to be an isolated incident with a single-source exposure. The site of possible exposure is known and on private property. It has been secured pending further environmental investigation. An ongoing collaborative investigation is underway involving the Virginia Department of Health, local physicians and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Because we are seeing some influenza activity in the community, people in the area may experience flu symptoms. If you are concerned you may be developing influenza, please follow up with your family physician as you normally would. VDH will release additional information as warranted, as the investigation continues.
