I have tears in my eyes and amazing memories! The fifties were when I was in high school, met my husband (December 28th, 1958) and got my first transistor radio. At age16 (1957) no questions asked I had to get a job. From then on I had to buy my own clothes. I wore my cousins Prom dresses - saved my Mom $ and no one had seen them before anyway. There was nothing more beautiful than my wedding dress. (Bought used for $250.00). The boys rented white sports jackets. Having only brothers and almost all boy cousins I learned how to shoot baskets and play pig. I was the only girl playing baseball with the boys. I climbed trees and wasnt afraid to ride my bike as fast as it would go. My baby brother arrived in the fifties. I loved Friday nights going to football games, which btw almost all the kids and parents went to. After the game there was sock hops in the gym where everyone really danced!!! Dancing a slow dance meant a teacher would come over and tell you to not dance so close and dont put your head on his shoulder. : )). Fun was going tobogganing when it way below freezing (Chicago) and having your feet get so cold we all would get into one car and rub each others feet. We were lucky if the cars heater worked. Lol. Every generation has good and bad memories. Mine include The whole family went to church every Sunday-even if you were sick. It gave me a warm loving feeling. I am grateful because Mom was always there when I got home. Dad always had a job and sometimes two. My extended family all lived very close. CHRISTMAS was all about Jesus. We each got one or two gifts mostly clothes. Easter was our day to rejoice our risen Christ. Candy and eggs and maybe a new dress or hat. Mom baked yes baked all our birthday cakes. I loved helping Dad in our little garden. I loved helping clean after he killed our Sunday dinner (chicken of course). My memories that I fondly remember are Mom and Dad loving each other and having a big brother to protect me and a little brother for me to protect. I am happy for my Sons and their families. Ralphs and my song was --- My Happiness. (Connie Francess).
