I havent been too stoked on films that have come out this year (Mind you I am yet to see Locke, Boyhood, Calvary, The hundred Foot Journey, Snowpiecer, 20000 days) But this has hit a note with me and I loved it thoroughly. The main reason I enjoyed this film so much was how Woody Allen used minimal coverage, the nostalgic charming style in modern cinema and the constant use of well structured dialogue. I fell in love from the start with the pre movie credits and the whole set up for Colin Firths character done in a terrific Oner. The film was set in the most beautiful locations possible for this take on a romantic comedy, it felt like everything was shot at an ideal time of day with the light raking in through these grand sets and even playing into the dialogue. Darius Khondji shot the film so well, with striking naturalistic light and perfectly executed but subtle camera moves. He made these still minimal cutting frames full of life and I wont be surprised if a Oscar nom was to come his way. This was played real well, Colin Firth was the glue to the film and held the performances together. Emma Stone was terrific but Id say talks for her to get an Oscar nom is a bit of hot water. She is definitely being advertised as the start but is a supporting act for sure. Yet being a Romantic comedy the themes Woody Allen was exploring was Faith and Honesty, the whole subtext seemed almost like a film Allen made to make sense of it all to himself. All in all Woody Allen still killing and is not out of date with film and isnt overrated. 8/10 At the moment favourite films of the year (seen in cinemas): 1. Palo Alto 2. Charlies Country 3. Magic in the Moonlight 4. The Grand Budapest Hotel 5. Chef imdb/title/tt2870756/
