I havent ever posted here before and I didnt know Meg personally. I do have a story to share tho...In a week and a half I will be competing in the Lake Placid Ironman. This will be my 1st IM. Like most of people, I looked up my bib number already, a number randomly assigned. #1017. Regular old number...except not for me. I am an unlikely participant to say the very least. Aside from the fact that I had a debilitating accident 13 years ago and only have 40% use of my left arm, achillies tendonitis in both feet and plantar fasciatis in one foot - this winter (late January) my beloved father, Sheldon, fell ill. (I am proud of so many things about my father, but I never hesitate to brag when I can that in 1944 he was a 19 year old Jew that signed up to be a foot soldier in the army and landed on the beaches of Normandy just weeks after the initial invasion to face those that were trying to annihilate Jews off the face of the earth.) I stopped training and was at his beside caring for him around the clock until the moment he left this earth, thank G-d peacefully, on February 7. Before he died he had me promise I would take care of my mother. Just over 2 months later (April 9), my mother fell and broke her spine, pelvis and sacrum, and I stopped training again to take care of her until she was stable. So what about #1017? Its my Dads birthday, Oct 17. I love him and miss him with every cell of my not-quite-in-top-shape (due to injuries and time spent away from training) body. I am so proud to be wearing his birthday as my race number.
