I heard a Toronto city councillor on the radio burbling on about Toronto being one of the world’s great cities, needing a mayor worthy of it. Nice thought, but metropolitan Toronto has (2011 census) 5,939,241 people, even including Orangeville, Bradford, and Alliston. In the same class as Belo Horizonte, Ahmedabad, Hangzhou, Miami, and Luanda. Good places, but not quite among the world’s great cities.
