I hope everyone realizes that UNCs scandal is just a small sample of what is happening at many, many other universities in this country. The NCAA is every bit a part of this issue by allowing/enabling college coaches to recruit athletes- in some cases- before they even enter high school, or are barely into their high school years and well before they have a clue whether the institution meets THEIR needs and interests in their future. Club coaches are culpable because many do not lay out the full realities of what it means to play a collegiate sport and often use the list of recruited athletes to recruit younger athletes to keep their pipeline going (for some its quite the power trip as well). Parents are culpable by prioritizing scholarships and glory over education, although I do think that many are insufficiently informed and savvy to the real deal and succumb to caveat emptor. Athletes are culpable because they only see the glitz and glamour of playing at the collegiate level and often think the courting they are getting by coaches is a genuine sentiment. Until EVERYONE prioritizes getting an education that yields a usable degree that will yield a tangible future, this problem will continue to fester at many institutions- whether it is publicized or kept under the rug.
