I hope you never have the experience I recently had, touring the wildlife repository—overflowing with dead animals—at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge outside of Denver. Each row in the warehouse, organized by species, contains a staggering quantity of seized illegal wildlife products. My US Fish and Wildlife Service guide told me there are over 1 million specimens in the room. More than 1 million tiger, elephant, bird, monkey, reptile, fish and sea turtle products—to name a few—are lined up on display. There is a row of primates, a row of bears, and an entire row of reptile-skin shoes. And then there is the row of big cats. Tigers. Lions. Snow leopards. Each frozen, teeth bared, as if in a final act of self-defense. Yet, even amidst this haunting backdrop, there is good news: The United States is listening to WWF supporters like you and has taken a stand against wildlife crime and the demand that fuels it. Will you join together with us and make a monthly donation to take a stand for wildlife today? Just two months ago, the US government crushed six tons of ivory confiscated since the 1989 commercial ivory sales ban, an act that showed the world that we will not tolerate illegal wildlife trafficking. And in December, President Obamas Advisory Council on Wildlife Trafficking—which includes leaders and experts from WWF—held its first public meeting. China just crushed six tons of its illegal ivory. The Philippines crushed five tons last summer. Belgium and France plan to destroy their stocks this spring. The momentum is shifting. WWF is helping to make a difference. And we need your support. Will you join together with us and make a monthly donation to take a stand for wildlife today? We are pushing for more action. WWF is asking for a moratorium on elephant ivory trade and sales in the US. We are also calling for a national strategy on wildlife trafficking. By stemming the demand for illegal wildlife products, we can ensure that wildlife has a fighting chance for survival.
