I just finished a book by John Grisham called The Appeal (yes I can read). With election day almost here, I thought I would comment on it. The book is about a chemical company polluting the water in a small town that causes many of its residents to get cancer and some to die. The company is sued and the plaintiff is awarded big bucks. After the award an appeal is made to the state supreme court. It just so happens an election for Supreme Court Justice is near. Millions of dollars are funneled into the election so that the court can become more conservative and hopefully overturn the award. Of course there is a twisty ending to keep you guessing. It is a book of fiction that touches on many problems with the election process. Should we stop big lawsuits to be more friendly to business? Should Supreme Court members be elected? Should the funding of their election come from the public? Is the court for sale to the highest bidders? Could that happen in WV? Does this sound like a recent WV election? Election day is next Tuesday. I hope to cast my ballot tomorrow. Many are frustrated with politics, politicians and the country in general. It is far from a perfect system but right now it is what we have. Let your voice be heard. I am finished with the book. If you want to know how it ends, Ill let you read it. For some cash Ill tell you an ending. It may not be the same as the book.
