I just finished a novel set during WWII. It was mentioned of a great new style food after the war of basically French fries dipped in mayonnaise. Guess I am an American because I never thought of that. So if I am making homemade French fries how about homemade mayonnaise. Here is a recipe from the family cookbook. 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground mustard 4 tablespoons vinegar or lemon juice 1 egg 2 cups oil Mix sugar, salt, mustard and egg together. Add oil about a tablespoon at a time, beating consistently with rotary style beater until mixture starts to thicken, then add about 1/2 cup at a time. When thick add lemon juice or vinegar and mix well. Store in covered jar until ready for use. Although this says rotary beater I am a modern gal and used my blender. But they didnt always have our modern appliances did they? New respect for my grandmothers and aunts.
