I just got back from Detroit. It wasnt originally intended as a genealogical visit, it was rather a chance to experience and document the present, not the past. But, someone on the Detroit Genealogy FB group mentioned the Burton Collection housed in the Main Library, which is just 2 blocks from where we stayed in Midtown. So I spent time there checking Polk Directories to find evidence of the shoe store my maternal grandfather owned on Hastings and Oakland streets. I did find entries for 1925-8 for the store with addresses on those streets. There were several that were accompanied by a home address on Philadelphia Street, which was not on any of his census docs, BUT, I was pretty sure it was the address given on his Declaration of Intent Nat. form filed in 1925. I didnt have it online, because I found the original doc in my fathers files, so had to wait until I got home to check. Yep--ts the exact same address.
