I just got back from seeing Pride. The film tells the inspirational story of how Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM), a queer liberation group, formed solidarity with miners in the darkest days of 1984 as the Tory government tried to starve striking workers into submission. Considering the brutality inflicted upon the mining communities, and the long term harm done by the loss of that battle by the unions, the film does remarkably well to end on a high, showing why solidarity matters: Mining communities are being bullied like we are, being harassed by the police, just as we are. One community should give solidarity to another. It is really illogical to say: ‘I’m gay and I’m into defending the gay community but I don’t care about anything else’. Great performances from Dominic West, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and others. If you havent seen it yet, go do so this weekend!
