I just got my first ever visit from the NHK Man while living in Japan. 8pm: (Doorbell) (Video intercom) Ryan: What? NHK Man: Im with NHK. Can I come in? R: Its a little late, isnt it? NHK: Sorry, are you home in the afternoon? R: No. Just come on in. (I buzz him in) NHK: Sorry I came so late. (Shows me pictures of TVs) R: I dont have a TV. NHK: Do you have a smart phone? R: Yes. NHK: What kind of smart phone? iPhone? Galaxy? R: Nexus 5 NHK: And is that just one smart phone? R: Yes. NHK: Okay, thank you, goodbye. The NHK Man is a guy coming around making sure youre not trying to steal cable TV. Its common knowledge in the foreigner community to just say you dont speak Japanese, and you dont have a TV. I actually dont have a TV and just watch Hulu, so Im legit. But I assume that the questions about the smart phone were mostly lie detector tests. For example, if I had said to the question about the smart phone, Ummm...smart phone? Umm...no...um...yes...maybe? then that would invite further inquiry. But I just gave a flat-out yes, and told him exactly what smart phone I had, and that was enough for him to be on his way. Be wary of these extraneous questions, my fellow foreign community, just in case you do get a visit from the NHK Man ;)
