I just got off the phone with a friend of mine (Noe) who works on the plantation. The descriptions are … incredible. Before the storm, he invited a friend (Osvoldo) over, and he didnt want to come … he wanted to stay in his place and be with his stuff, but Noe convinced him to come. They both weathered Odile in my casita above the shop. He said it wasnt like rain, it was like solid water coming at them sideways. The whole place shook for hours - the sound unrelenting and deafening. He is sure he saw a huge palm fly down the street at incredible speed - he was sure the place was going to crumble and they were going to die. When the wind abated, and there was light, they took stock. The neighbourhoods structures did not fare well. Terrible destruction, but not as bad as other neighbourhoods. When they went to see Osboldos place, it simply wasnt there. Didnt exist. Noe told me that winds of 270 kilometres per hour were recorded in Todos Santos … if thats true, that is Cat 4. Lots of people asking how the plantation faired … very well, but if any of you want to help out with tidying up, there are several hundred person hours of that to do - Jaja! So good to hear Noes voice … incredibly, to Noes knowledge, there were no deaths in all of Todos Santos. Noe did hear of a house that collapsed on a Mexican man in Pescadero, and he was killed. My good friend, Ulices Cortes Munguias daughter, Ixchel Cortez Ramírez, suffered a cut on her leg which took 18 stitches to close up when a window blew out in their flat. They were pinned down for hours as the storm raged on. The situation in La Paz is not as desperate as Cabo San Lucas. Ulices has told me that if there is something to line up for, they are all doing it: Water, ATM, Food. It is not all peaceful in La Paz, but it is not the breakdown of civility that Cabo San Lucas is seeing. The Mexican working class in Cabo San Lucas is hungry, thirsty, broke, and for the most part, have seen everything they have accumulated turned into slurry.
