I just learned that our Seattle public school, Whittier Elementary - TopicsExpress

I just learned that our Seattle public school, Whittier Elementary has reduced lunch time to 15 minutes this year and I want to know if this issue is isolated to Whittier or are all Seattle schools seeing this horrible schedule change? Students are allowed to stay in the lunch room to finish their lunch, but obviously this cuts into their already-short recess time. For kids who buy lunch, by the time they stand in line to get lunch, they have NO TIME to eat. This means all of the kids on free & reduced lunch program have no time to eat and this may be their only opportunity for a healthy meal in their day. For the young kindergartners, this means a barrage of big kids come in to eat just 15 minutes after they are walked into the lunch room and they are pushed out. Of course, most kids wont opt to finish lunch if it means missing their short recess and it explains why my kids are coming home with full lunch boxes! This has to do with SPS not meeting their minimum instructional hour requirements, and the bus schedule is partially dictating the fact that they cant extend the school day to make up this time. Is this affecting your schools, too? The Whittier parents are clearly organizing to change this horrible policy. An employer would be cited for giving less and 30 minutes to an employee...and kids eat even slower, and they NEED their recess time too! Other Seattle Public Schools parents, please look into it and let me know if your school is also affected!
