I just opened my fridge and found myself thinking that indeed, poverty is inhuman. Im looking at slices of cheese and polony, and remembering how, growing up, these two items were a serious luxury. If you had a lunchbox of a cheese and polony sandwich, you were considered wealthy (this is where the terms cheeseboy/cheesegirl come from). Other kids would want to play with you and even carry your schoolbag, just so you could share with them your lunch. They had sandwiches with fillings such as peanut butter or jam (and believe it or not, there were actually kids who had dry bread, which they would fill up with mazimba, in particular cheese-nacks, and thats what theyd eat for lunch). So to them, polony and cheese were a serious delicatessen. Im thinking that 1kg Rainbow Simply Chicken polony costs under R30.00 and 24 slices of cheese are about R35.00. So even as the cost of living is high in 2014, one can still get these two items, for a little over R50.00. And yet, for so many people, they were a great luxury. This goes on to show you just how poor our people in the townships we grew up in were, that to them, cheese and polony were considered a serious luxury. Such is the indignity of the Black condition...
