I just realized that what bothers me about so much fantasy fiction, particularly the big fandoms that I can think of off the top of my head, is how hard they lean on the notion that one is chosen for greatness: one stumbles upon fantastic events and is swept up by them willy-nilly (Narnia, the Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Wheel of Time), or picked out at a certain age (Harry Potter, Percy Jackson), or snatched up by an intercessory figure (the Hobbit, the Heralds of Valdemar). I want heroes who come across challenges and choose, without coercion or destiny or the world at stake, to dig into the madness and adventure of their own free will.
