I just received a call from one of the radio stations. They wanted to know why i have said on Oman FM that students should rise up against Govt,s decision to remove subsidies from universities. You see this was part of my contribution to a statement by the National President of NUGS on the subsidies. Now this is my point. Education is a major responsibility of any Govt, all over the world. Indeed, as far as I am concerned, it is the major responsibility of Govt. It is the most important infrastructure project of any Govt, building human capacity of a country. So Govts must not run Education as if they are running a restaurant, a factory or any other business. It is not a profit making enterprise. Indeed it one of the most important leveler of society. Bridging the gap between the haves and the have nots while improving the country as a whole. Govts all over the world provide public education to allow everybody access to it. Of course in Capitalist societies they also allow private education for those who can afford it. In our universities we also allow Student Representative councils and their mother union, National Union of Ghana Students. These institutions are there to advocate for students. So when Govt policies are not in the interest of students what should NUGS do
