I just received a check in the mail for $20.46 from Toyota Motor Corp. Unintended Acceleration Marketing, Sales Practices, and Products Liability Litigation. On the one hand, I feel that the entire unintended acceleration fiasco was a total miscarriage of justice, and I dont want this dirty money. There was no replicable scientific explanation for the reported incidents other than driver error, and the NHTSA said Toyota vehicles were safe. However, a jury and the US Department of Justice, in spite of all the evidence, and likely influenced by years of sensationalist, misleading, and xenophobic media coverage, hit Toyota with billions of dollars in penalties. This supposed safety problem was entirely fraudulent, and it pales in comparison to GMs ignition switch problem, which was ignored for years by the company and the government and resulted in at least 13 deaths. On the other hand, I would like a pizza.
