I just received my health insurance member handbook today. Normally I dont read it I just throw it away, but for some reason I got curious and I opened it. As Im browsing through this book I come across a section of covered and non covered medical services. I continue reading until I get to the section for Transgender Services aka Gender Identity Disorder. Oh boy, or girl, or neither, I read the list of covered services. One caught my eye and has stumped me. It reads and I quote verbatim, Gender reassignment surgery that is not cosmetic in nature. WHAT? Are you joking? How are surgeries to make a boy a girl and a girl a boy not cosmetic in nature? How do you change an apple to a banana and vice versa and cover the procedure(s) without cosmetics? I dont get it. Either Im stupid or they are. Its a good thing my insurance covers mental illnesses cuz they should require counseling before doing any such procedure. Oh, and why is tubaligation reversal not covered which isnt a cosmetic procedure but gender reassignment is? Who makes this crap up?
