I just saved a life! (sorta) Picture the scene... A man holding his baby, standing next to a privet (or boxwood!) hedge at a bus stop. Baby is leaning over Dads shoulder, reaching for a tiny purple flower. He grabs a leaf, and like a baby, starts to put it into his mouth. Enter me, carrying laundry, on my way home. I see Baby about to eat the leaf. I drop my laundry and run screaming over to Dad, No! No! No!! I explain to Dad that the tiny purple flower is atropa belladonna, also known as Deadly Nightshade. Lethally poisonous. Dads eyes get wide, he takes the leaf from Baby, and he quickly moves away from the hedge. And the day is saved, thanks to an amateur knowledge of botany!!
