Part of the problem is that because of the perverse subsidies in the Farm Bill, the burger was 99 cents and the Fruit & Walnut Salad (with edamame, 14 kinds of lettuce, mandarin oranges, apples, etc.) was $6.95, so those on a fixed income got more calories/buck for eating unhealthier foods since the price doesnt include the real costs, including higher medical costs. (Because of that first salad, McDonalds became the largest purchaser of apples in the world.)
