I just so happened to be in the hallway today when the bell rang - TopicsExpress

I just so happened to be in the hallway today when the bell rang between periods. As they had done throughout the day, senior girls led the way dressed in borrowed jerseys and jogging in formation. With military-style cadence they sang out, We are the seniors, the mighty, mighty seniors. Caught in between my classroom and the copier room, I stepped aside and watched as students laughed and sang along to music that blared from loudspeakers. I studied the smiling faces of boys and girls eager for the end-of-day assembly and the Homecoming weekend that follows. I felt a sudden, unexpected pang of sorrow. Youth is so fleeting. All those carefree, fresh-faced kids will soon enough be rushing to college classes, punching a time clock or defending our country in some foreign land. They will know great joy, but they will never escape the sorrow that comes with living. Youth is ephemeral. That is its beauty. It is a perfect summers day remembered in the bitter cold of winter.
