I just want parents to really really think about circumcision. - TopicsExpress

I just want parents to really really think about circumcision. This is only acceptable because its a norm (thankfully the changing norm but still acceptable.) Just because its culturally normative (in the US) doesnt make it ok. If it was culturally normative to cut the nostrils, ear lobes, pinky toe, or finger tips these would be just as acceptable, yet they arent and we would never consider it ok to do this to an infant. The foreskin is an important part of the anatomy with a function. Where as yes, we could smell, touch, walk, and hear with out the above mentioned body parts, it would be easier to do so with those parts. I just want parents to really think about the rights of their son. Yes as their parent you do have say, but they are not your property. They are your sons. And if they want it done later, that is just fine. And you can explain that you wanted it to be their choice, because you respect their autonomy. Parenting from respect of their personhood and autonomy. Please consider this. Also, it is so easy to care for an intact penis. I have an intact son and if you have any questions on how to care for an intact boy just ask. Also, if you are a parent who did circumcise your son. I hug you and hope you dont beat yourself up if you have regrets. Just realize, when you know better you do better. Forgive yourself and when its time you can explain it to your son when he asks. And become an advocate for other boys if you choose to. Pregnant moms, dont leave this to your husband, if I had Max would have been cut. Just because it was done to your husband, is not an excuse to perpetuate this practice. And credit to my husband who has come around 180 degrees on this subject and would never consider cutting a child now that he knows better. I apologize if this offends my friends. It is just something I am very concerned about. I would be so upset if my parents would have cut me (like so many other girls in the world are cut.) I am thankful I live in a country it isnt the cultural norm to cut a female.
