I keep a reef aquarium. The aquarium has been running for over 3 years. I am propigating corals, macro algae, and other inverabrates that inhabit the reef. There are only 3 fish: a six line wrasse and a pair of clownfish. The clownfish spawn, but due to the manner in which one needs to rear the fry, I have not done so. I have been anti-protein skimmer with this aquarium, having a refugium was my plan to deal with excess nutrients. It worked for sometime, after about a year, I began to battle red cyno bacteria. I continued this battle for the past 2 years. About 6 months ago I decided that I needed to go with a protein skimmer, the issue I had was that placing it in a good spot was difficult. Also which one. These were answered by Nick Margerison who brought me an Aquaticlife 115 Skimmer. The skimmer installed in a rear filter chamber, but required the heater to be placed in the tank. I have to say I am very happy, no cyno, corals are huge and growing, the fish have not looked better. I kept reef aquariums from the mid 1980s until 1990, this is my first marine tank in 21 years. Technology is pretty awesome, LED lights are costly initially, but pay for themselves in low electric use, not burning out, and flexibility.
