I know I run the risk of upsetting people by saying this but I feel it has to be put out there so please read this as it was intended (with the very best of intentions).. The very first thing that needs to happen before any other kind of change can ensue is a positive outlook and attitude. I understand this may be incredibly difficult for some as theyre facing incredibly tough times personally, however I believe it will be the one thing that will move us on from our current scary situation. We all need to be supportive of each others ideas and suggestions, they may not all be viable or even well informed but it doesnt mean that a great idea cant be born from them. We all need to share information and help, some just arent aware of the help they could be entitled to. We need to volunteer our time and skills, everyone has a skill wether it be a qualification, licence or just plain something theyre good at. The pay packages some have become accustomed to just wont be available for a while so we need to be mindful that a little gesture can go a long way. This might be as simple as offering to mowing your elderly neighbours lawn as you know they arent capable rather than complaining and waiting for abatement notices. Or helping with a community group or project that needs hands to get it off the ground. On the subject of money, when your needing to budget and save its so easy to find your self stuck at home in front of a tv, why not take advantage of all the free places and programs the town has to offer. This is also a good way to come up with great ideas. You may find yourself at home with the kids more now while your partner picks up some extra work. Why not get the kids out to one of these tracks, are they old enough to visit the museum and learn a bit more about where they come from? If the weather is bad or if your kids are little why not take them to the hub or birth to four program at MHS. I know the people that run these things absolutely love to see dads attending so please dads dont let that hold you back. Staying on the subject of kids, they need to be heavily involved in this movement, their opinions matter, their ideas are important and they are the future of this town. Let them help decide what that will look like! I also know that while budgeting it can be so tempting to purchase from the north-west and the internet, especially when it comes to nappies, formula and other expensive necessities. Now is the time to support our local businesses as much as possible otherwise we will lose them! If we all try our best to spend our money locally our local business owners will be able to put more of that profit back into helping the community. This situation affects all of us. Everyones livelyhood is at risk wether that be immediately or long term, we all need to do what we can to make sure our town doesnt disappear off the map. Some people and familys will need or choose to move, this is very understandable and they shouldnt be made feel guilty about it, but those that would like to and are able to stay will need something to stay for. Lets try our very best to attract new industries, businesses and investors to our patch of paradise with a positive, proactive and inviting attitude. Show the world that we are ready to rise up from the tragedies that have devastated us.
