I know Ive been on this before crabbing about allergies and schools responsibility, but I cant contain it anymore. My Joe has a peanut allergy, so luckily I can say my opinion freely based off experience. Yes, we have been to the ER, yes their have been ambulances at my house, yes Mark has flown down Main Street to Good Sam on more than one occasion. In my opinion (humble about opinions, I am not :)), it is NOT the schools sole responsibility or the PTA or the teachers or the Principal or the school nurse to keep our kids safe from their allergen at all times. When kids go into the doctor to get shots, are they scared? Most times, yes. If a three year old walks into a doctors office to get a shot and is able to fear it, than that same three year old would also have the capability of fearing the hospital experience they have when they eat the peanut, or whatever their allergy is from. Theyll remember the IV, the nurses, the spots on their body, the itching, the huge swelling eyes, the difficulty in breathing---THAT is scary. A three year old knows and remembers fear. This means that a kid who is 6 or 8 or 11 is also extremely capable of knowing what they are allergic to and being responsible enough to make decisions accordingly to keep themselves safe. Too much pressure is being put on schools and teachers to watch over this---when is it the parents and childs responsibility? And as far as making concessions for Joe because of his allergy---DO NOT DO IT! If he cant have a Snickers bar when everyone else can, TOO BAD! I expect no special treatment for my kid because of this allergy. This was the card he was dealt. Its my job to teach him to DEAL! Our Special Little Snowflakes need to learn on their own that this is THEIR problem, and not everyone elses. To think that an entire classroom of kids cant have a special treat because of MY kids allergy is ridiculous. Joe knows not to eat it or touch it and he can easily have something else that doesnt contain peanut. All other kids should not have to suffer because of this. This allergy issue is getting out of hand. It is my responsibility and Joes. Nobody else is responsible for this. I put it on nobody else at all. If he accidentally were to ingest a peanut at school, they have an Epi Pen and its called 911. The best thing parents of kids with allergies can do is educate, educate, educate their kid. Remind, remind, remind when they go to a birthday party or something. We cant raise a generation of weenies that look to mom and dad for every little thing. Last week, Brenna forgot her lunch. I told her that I would have Mark bring it on his way to work. Of course, I forgot. As Im eating my lunch, I gasped as I called the school knowing it was past her lunchtime! The Assistant Principal answered the phone, and as soon as I said, hi, this is Kerry Quirin, she said, Brenna ate lunch! Phew! A friend had given her some lunch. I asked B when she got home, I forgot, but why didnt you call me? She said, Nah, I figured I would just suck it up. I forgot it, mom. Atta girl! Learn now to deal with lifes curveballs. Accept responsibility. Our problems are nobodys but our own. And I will never put the huge responsibility of a food allergy on the shoulders of my kids school. Never.
