I know this 10 Books That Have Stayed With You thing is *so* last - TopicsExpress

I know this 10 Books That Have Stayed With You thing is *so* last week, but Ive been away, and Neil Snowdon nominated me, so its only fair to rise to the challenge. Having said that Im cheating and choosing 20 books, because I find it impossible to limit myself to just 10. The rules Ive imposed on myself are to only choose one book per author/series, and to write down the first 20 books which jumped into my head (which means I may well have missed out something obvious and vital). Im assuming too that this list isnt necessarily supposed to be the best 20 books Ive ever read (though some of them *would* come into that category), but simply the ones that a) had the most impact on me at the time, and b) have had the greatest and furthest-reaching influence on my life/work. Here, then, in the rough order in which I read them, are my 20: CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY - ROALD DAHL DOCTOR WHO AND THE AUTON INVASION - TERRANCE DICKS HORROR MOVIES - ALAN FRANK 11TH PAN BOOK OF HORROR STORIES - ed HERBERT VAN THAL THE SECRET OF TERROR CASTLE - ROBERT ARTHUR LORD OF THE FLIES - WILLIAM GOLDING TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD - HARPER LEE THE FOG - JAMES HERBERT THE SHINING - STEPHEN KING DARK COMPANIONS - RAMSEY CAMPBELL THE PENGUIN COMPLETE GHOST STORIES OF M.R. JAMES SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES - RAY BRADBURY GHOST STORY - PETER STRAUB THE CEMENT GARDEN - IAN McEWAN SONG OF KALI - DAN SIMMONS THE WOODWITCH - STEPHEN GREGORY THE SECRET HISTORY - DONNA TARTT ALL QUIET ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS - MAGNUS MILLS THE TIME TRAVELERS WIFE - AUDREY NIFFENEGGER THE LITTLE STRANGER - SARAH WATERS
