I like police officers. I care about their safety. I want them to return intact to their families every night. And I recognize that they have a stressful and dangerous job to perform. I generally have had positive interactions with them over the years. I have also been racially profiled, accosted, terrified, detained, and mishandled by officers on more than one occasion. This police insurrection in New York illustrates the need for police reforms in this department and around the country. Police officers are civil servants. We would not tolerate such disrespect from anyone else in government and we should not tolerate it from them. The only proper form of protest is resignation. If the stress of the job of maintaining the peace, using methods that dont criminalize whole groups of people in the communities policed is too much, then find another form of work. Let someone else do what you are unwilling or unable to do.
