I like to think that Im pretty good with the turn of a phrase, and even entertain the notion that Im a writer of sorts. Having consumed literary feasts from e.e. cummings to E. E. Doc Smith, from Stephen King to Jean-Paul Sartre to William Shakespeare (in the original Kliingon, mind you) I consider myself somewhat well read. Yet out of this plethora of written work, nothing has touched me more than some simple words I saw here this morning. I offer them to my friends and family: A few nights ago I snuggled my head into my pillow and closed my eyes to sleep. The image of my grandson, Toryn, bloomed in my minds eye. I saw his big drooly smile and heard his laughter. He looks so much like his mommy. Madison is twenty-seven years old. I thought to myself, It has been an entire lifetime ago since I held her the way I hold Toryn. It has been a lifetime and yet...only the blink of an eye. I have heard it said that grandchildren make you realize your age, make you feel old. Toryn makes me realize that twenty-seven years is really not so long. I have lived so much in that short time. I have loved and lost, laughed and cried, learned so much and grown up to be who I want to be. I have found my faith and my footing. I was only twenty years old when I gave birth to Madison. Barely grown. Now, I am not old. I am full. I prayed and asked God for another blink of an eye...twenty-seven more years? Just one more blink, spent healthy. This blink of time I will be more thankful for I have learned how quickly time passes, how quickly life can slip from our grasp. I have learned to be joyful when the path is rocky, peaceful when the storm is raging. I have found eyes that seek out the beauty of a thing. I have a bit more wisdom and great deal more appreciation. This next blink will be even better than the first. I will never grow old...only so full that this world cannot contain me. Donna, I am both proud and humbled to call you friend.
