I listened to a lot of angry music today. Thoroughly enjoyed it btw. None of it was rap. Its funny how artists from other genres can make songs using violent, angry themes and imagery and society (for the most part) doesnt let that define the artist as a person. People seem to understand that its just a song....expression of emotion or a thought in music form. Artists of other genres arent looked at as criminals because of the content of their music. Rappers though? A completely different matter. If you write about a violent thought, express some rage, or tell a story that contains some of the same content that people watch in action movies, that must say something about your character. Why is that? Because a lot of rappers try to infuse the content of their music into their overall identity. Some may really be criminals that started rhyming...but a lot of them are just playing a role...that they cant seem to turn off. You know, so people can get that its a performance. They try to go hard whenever they can because they think it adds credibility to the themes they rap about. In person, in their interactions on social media, they want to be seen as a representative of the songs they write. And in a lot of cases, the fans will make them pay a heavy price if they dont act like that. It might be time to re-examine that type of thinking....
